It is estimated that 88% of women and girls have been affected by female genital mutilation or female circumcision.


Type of FGM

Types 1, 2 and 3 are known in Sudan.


The law

Type 3 FGM was made against the law in Sudan in 1946 but at present there is no law making FGM illegal in Sudan.


Women's views

Sudan is a country of high prevalence yet only 48% of girls and women believe that it should continue.


Men's views

In a survey 64% of men said they believe that FGM should end. This is compared to 21% of men in Mali and 89% of men in the United Republic of Tanzania.
